crew completed scheduled inspections of Space Shuttle Atlantis’ heat shield

The STS-115 crew completed scheduled inspections of Space Shuttle Atlantis’ heat shield this morning. The astronauts used cameras on the shuttle’s robotic arm to conduct the scans.

Imagery specialists and engineers are reviewing the data from today’s inspection and from previous activities to see if focused inspections with the orbiter boom sensor system are necessary.

Mission managers decided to wave off STS-115 landing attempts today in order to allow the crew to inspect the orbiter. The extra scans are being used to determine if an object observed by flight controllers using a TV close to Atlantis on Tuesday came off the orbiter. It was observed following standard tests of Atlantis’ reaction control system about 2:45 a.m. EDT Tuesday.
